Be inspired by Beast Market! Photographer Amanda Crowther, has taken a series of photos of the people who have inspired Chol Theatre's play, Beast Market. The photographs will be displayed at the Medialounge, The Media Centre in Huddersfield from Friday 2nd May until 30th May 2008. The exhibition will also feature winning entries from the Huddersfield Literature Festival in response to the pictures.See some images from the opening event.

This year's writing competition is a competition with a difference! A selection of Amanda Crowther's photographs are available for download. Click anywhere on the pictures to download PDFs of all the images, saving them on to your own computer. Use your chosen photo as inspiration, (in whatever way you like), for any of the following:
a) a poem (up to 40 lines)
b) a short story, or extract of a longer piece of prose (up to 2000 words)
c) a set of lyrics, rap, or piece of spoken word (up to 40 lines; you can enter this work on CD, or minidisc)
d) a song (up to 40 lines; you can enter this work on CD, or minidisc
e) a script (one A4 page, maximum)
Entry costs: £3.00 per entry into the adult writing competition; FREE entry into the children's writing competition; £2.00 per entry into the family writing competition. Please write your name, address, age, contact number email and which category you are entering in capitals, on the back of each entry. Please do not write your details on the front of any typed worked, or CD submission/s.
Categories: Your writing can be entered in any of the following categories:
a) adult (18+)
b) children can enter under any of the following categories
primary age
secondary age
c) Young People (16-17)
d) family/carer group: this is for parents/carers and children who wish to write a piece collaboratively
1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes will be awarded in all categories. Winners of the adult writing competition will be announced at the event entitled, Small Presses, Big Voices; winners of the young people's writing competition will be announced at the festival Open Mic event with Generation TxT; the children's writing and family writing categories will be judged by poet, Nick Toczek. Winning entries for the children's and family writing categories will be announced by Nick Toczek at his family writing workshop event.
All entries are non returnable, so please don't send originals. The competition will be judged by writers attending the 2008 festival. Judges decisions are final. Winning entries may be 'published' on the festival website and in local press; in this case, all writers will receive full credit for their work.
Please don't forget to enclose a cheque for payment for entering the adult, young people's and family writing competitions. Please make cheques payable to the University of Huddersfield. Unfortunately we cannot accept entries via email, or without payment, unless the entry is for the children's writing competition.
